The London Lions kicked their league campaign off with a statement win by taming the Rebels in Essex.
The reigning Women’s British Basketball League champions built on their back-to-back EuroCup victories by picking up an impressive win against the Essex Rebels, with the final score 73-101.
In the first quarter of the game, the visitors began strongly – outscoring Essex by 26-16. The Lions continued their impressive scoring form with the eventual player of the game, Savannah Wilkinson, hitting a standout three-pointer in the opening few minutes of the game.
As the Lions marched on into the second quarter, they took off where they left off by putting up another 26 points before half-time. Shanice Beckford-Norton excelled in the mid-range and found herself with 10 points after the first 20-minutes of action. The guard was also on the end of a full-court pass from Holly Winterburn – which was the highlight play of the game.
Although the Rebels picked up the scoring in the second quarter, they struggled in the third as London went on a 28-12 run. Consequently, the home side trailed by 35 points and faced a mammoth task heading into the final quarter of the game.
Coach Kaltsidou’s side were able to coast home from here, taking a huge opening day victory back to the capital.
