London Lions’ coach Mark Clark was a happy man after his side lifted the WBBL Cup with an 87-47 victory against Newcastle Eagles.
“Obviously I’m really pleased that Lions have won the Cup for the first time” said the London play-caller. “I described it as a great way to draw a line under the first half of the season. We’ve done well in Europe, we’ve won the Cup and we’re unbeaten in the league, so it’s a good time to go into the international break.”
Azania Stewart collected the MVP award after she dominated the showpiece event at both ends of the court. The GB international scored 20 points in a commanding display, contributing one assist and six rebounds, and her coach was delighted with her performance:
“It was great to see Azania get some recognition, she only played 21 minutes, but she did everything we needed her to do” he said
Clark was delighted to see Lions pick up the firm piece of silverware in the WBBL season:
“There were 6000 people at the start of the game and I think it was the biggest crowd ever or a WBBL game. it wasn’t a close game but Eagles tried and really fought hard. Across the roster everyone did well, and it was good to see Leah McDement back in action and to get [academy players] get Nicholle [Lavionier] and Fatmata [Jennah] some court time.”
