It was a day to forget for Barking Abbey Lions Academy as they lost a pair of tight games at Oaklands Wolves, on Wednesday.

The girls continued their difficult season by losing 49-43 in overtime before the boys saw their offence dry up in the final period to allow Wolves a 67-61 victory.

The first period saw most of the offensive production in the game with the teams sharing 36 points before Wolves shaded a tight second quarter to lead 26-25 going into the locker room. Points continued to be at a premium in the third period as Wolves opened a 33-29 lead only to see Lions fight back to send the game into an extra period with the sides level at 43-43. However that proved to be as good as it go for David Lavinier’s team as Wolves scored all six of the overtime points to take the win.

In the boys’ game, Abbey started well with a 16-12 first period only to see the hosts fight back to go into the half-time break with a 36-34 lead. Lions restored their lead with a 17-10 third period to head into the final break 51-46, and the home side tied things up with three minutes on the clock before Oliver Wright hit a big three-pointer to put Oaklands in charge, and Wolves wrapped up the win at the foul line.

Emanuel Kanwei led Lions, hitting six of his 14 points in the first period. Eddy Colley added 12 while Paul Assante, Joe Buchanan and Zamoku Weluche all finished with ten points apiece. Lions are likely to need to win their final three games in they are to win the Elite Academy Basketball League South Conference title.
